On World Refugee Day, Engineers Australia acknowledges the significant contributions of refugee engineers, and of engineers providing humanitarian services to communities in crisis around the world.
“Engineers shape the world we live in, especially during times of crisis. Refugee Engineers from refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds bring unique perspectives and expertise that enhance the profession and strengthen our nation’s engineering capability,” said Engineers Australia CEO Romilly Madew AO.
Programs such as the Victorian Infrastructure Delivery Authority’s Engineering Pathway Industry Cadetship (EPIC) have been central to connecting refugee and asylum seeker engineers with major transport infrastructure projects across Victoria. Such initiatives not only leverage the expertise of experienced professionals but also help meet the industry’s growing demand for skilled engineers.
Beyond national borders, engineers are leading humanitarian efforts. Syrian refugee Asem Hasna used 3D printing technology to create affordable prosthetics for fellow amputees in Jordan’s refugee camps - a testament to the power of engineering in crisis situations.
“Engineers have always been at the forefront of solving humanity’s greatest challenges. From rebuilding communities after natural disasters to delivering access to clean water and sanitation, their impact is felt everywhere,” Ms Madew said.
Organisations such as RedR Australia and Engineers Without Borders Australia deploy engineering expertise to communities affected by disasters and conflict. These organisations send technical specialists across a range of disciplines - including disaster risk reduction, emergency preparedness, recovery and stabilisation - to support crisis situations both in Australia and internationally.
Engineers Australia’s Humanitarian Engineering Community of Practice continues to support and drive initiatives that use engineering skills for social good, reinforcing the profession’s commitment to engaging disadvantaged, marginalised or vulnerable communities.
“Today, on World Refugee Day, we celebrate the engineers bringing hope to those in crisis and the refugee engineers helping build Australia’s future,” Ms Madew said.
