Specialisations

Assessment and registration of specialist roles.

Like any profession, engineering practice has evolved to include specialisations and specialist roles. Specialisations are niche, distinct areas of engineering practice which originate from an area of practice or area of engineering.

Specialist roles can exist in any of the occupational categories and are usually nominated by business or government stakeholders in response to a vocational need.

There are currently three specialist roles – sea freight container inspection stand engineers, design practitioner vertical transport engineers and strata inspectors. Others are currently under development.

Assessment and registration

Engineers Australia has been appointed by the federal government to assess the qualifications and experience of engineering professionals who want to practice in a specialist role. We’re also required to keep a register of sea freight container inspection stand engineers and a panel of strata inspectors.

Because these specialist roles involve particular competencies for practice, additional assessment is required to be able to practice or be registered.

How to apply for assessment

Follow the steps outlined to be assessed in one of the specialisations.

To be eligible for assessment as a strata inspector, you need to be a member of Engineers Australia working as a professional engineer, engineering technologist or engineering associate.

You can apply if you’re an affiliate member, but you’ll first need to complete a competency assessment.

Assessment requirements

You’ll need to provide the following with your assessment application:

  • your member ID
  • first name, surname and contact details
  • a detailed CV demonstrating at least five years’ experience as a strata inspector or 10 years’ engineering experience. Your detailed CV must include the name and contact details of a referee who can verify your experience.
  • copies of three strata title project reports you have completed in the last five years. Each of these projects need to include:
    • project name
    • dates of project
    • location
    • your employer at the time
    • client’s name
    • name of at least one referee directly related to the project.

Include any project details which may support your application and demonstrate your understanding of the prescribed SBBIS requirements.

You’ll also need to agree to:

When you’ve prepared all your assessment documentation, email it to us explaining that you’d like to be assessed for registration on the strata inspector panel.

The fee to apply for assessment is $560.

Assessment outcome

You’ll be assessed by one of our qualified assessors who will review your documentation and may call you for an assessment interview. If your assessment is successful you’ll receive a letter of appointment via email.

To maintain your registration you’ll need to keep your membership valid and maintain your CPD.

If you disagree with your assessment outcome, you can apply for a review within three months or an appeal within six months. Fees apply for review and appeal.

To be eligible for assessment, you’ll need to:

  • be registered on the National Engineering Register as a professional engineer
  • be registered on a state register if you’re practising in a state or territory that requires it
  • demonstrate a minimum of five years of experience in the specialisation
  • have valid state certification if required
  • be an independent worker, not employed by the site or premises authorities.

Assessment requirements

You’ll need to provide the following with your assessment application:

  • your member ID
  • full legal name and contact details
  • a detailed CV
  • details of similar work you’ve completed in the last five years that involved the design or fabrication of steel structures similar to sea freight container stands. Also include:
    • the scope of work
    • dates that the work was undertaken
    • calculations and analysis from three similar structures in the past five years
    • the company you worked for at the time
    • the client's name.

When you’ve prepared all your assessment documentation, email it to us explaining that you’d like to be assessed for registration as a sea freight container inspection stands engineer.

The fee to apply for assessment is $560.

Assessment outcome

You’ll be assessed by one of our qualified assessors, who will review your documentation. If your assessment application is successful you’ll receive a numbered letter from us via email certifying that you meet the requirements to be registered as a Sea freight container inspection stands engineer.

Visit the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry website for more information.

If you disagree with your assessment outcome, you can apply for a review within three months or an appeal within six months. Fees apply for review and appeal.

To apply for a knowledge and skills assessment as a design practitioner vertical transport DP(VT) engineer, follow the steps on our website.
