Who are our Fellows?

Becoming a Fellow is recognition of your knowledge, achievement and contribution to the profession. Our Fellows are highly respected individuals recognised within their engineering community. Age alone does not guarantee Fellow status – it's about experience, recognition and earned respect. Our Fellows are committed to sharing their expertise, coaching others and continued learning.

If you've proven yourself through a prominent engineering career of significant experience and achievement, you're welcome to apply.

Eligibility

To qualify for Fellow membership, you need to:

  • Be a member or eligible for membership with Engineers Australia and demonstrate commitment to the profession through outstanding leadership and activities such as mentoring.
  • Be actively working in a senior position as a professional engineer, engineering technologist or engineering associate.

Plus, you should meet at least one of these criteria:

  • Have at least 15 years in positions of extensive responsibility in the design and execution of important engineering work and be recognised for your exceptional contributions to the profession.
  • Have held a position with major ongoing responsibility, like a CEO or head of an engineering unit, for at least five years. Your responsibilities should include managing company operations, a diverse multidisciplinary team and large, complex engineering projects.
  • Have advanced qualifications, like a PhD, hold a key position in the field and make significant contributions to engineering, such as being an associate professor or head of school.

Where to start

Head to our member portal to get started. The online Fellow application will require you to provide support from a minimum of two Fellow members in the form of a letter, outlining how they believe you meet the criteria for Fellowship. If you reside outside Australia, you can seek support from Fellows of institutions that we have a mutual recognition agreement with.

Membership FAQs

Fellow membership is considered by the National Membership Committee. The committee is made up of engineering peers and volunteers who meet around twice a month to review and approve applications.

Once submitted, you'll be notified when your application has been considered or if further information may be required.

To become a Fellow you must be practising as a professional engineer, engineering technologist or engineering associate and:

Be a member or be qualified for membership of Engineers Australia and have a demonstrated commitment to the engineering profession. Such as through exemplary leadership or mentoring activities.

plus

Have had extensive responsibility in the design or execution of important engineering work and achieved exceptional eminence in the profession. You would have held a position with this level of responsibility for at least 15 years.*

or

Hold a position with major ongoing responsibility, such as CEO or head of an engineering business unit. You’ll have held the position for at least five years and have responsibility for managing company operations, a multidisciplinary staff and large, complex engineering projects.

or

Have high-level education qualifications, hold a prominent position in the profession and have made a major contribution to the science or practice of engineering. For example, you have a PhD in an engineering discipline and hold a position as an associate professor or head of department in an academic institution.

*This does not mean 15 years since graduation. Engineers are expected to go through a period of professional formation after graduation, working under supervision as they develop the competencies that enable them to take responsibility for their work. This process generally takes about five years. Positions of the required level of responsibility follow this supervised formation period.

Your CV should provide detailed information on:

  • the positions you’ve held
  • your responsibility for the work of others and recognition you’ve received for that work
  • your engagement in achieving better outcomes in the projects you’ve led.

A list of projects or their details alone would not be sufficient. For more guidance, view our requirements for detailed CVs.

There is no fee applied if you're upgrading membership from another grade.

Pricing is determined by your membership grade and whether you need a competency assessment.

If you join mid year, we will pro-rata the fee on a monthly basis so that you only pay for the months you're with us.
