Engineers Australia’s Chief Engineer, Katherine Richards AM CSC will visit Cammeraygal High School this Monday to honour their Crobotics team – the first team from an Australian public school to compete at the prestigious FIRST Tech challenge European Premier event in the Netherlands.
The ten-student team, all in Year 12, designed, built and coded a competitive robot that earned them national recognition and a place on the international stage.
Their journey began in Year 9, with a last-place finish and a robot that didn’t work and ended with global recognition this month.
“When I first heard the Crobotics story, I was moved, excited and determined to congratulate the students in person,” Mrs Richards said.
“From setbacks to success, they’ve shown what perseverance, teamwork and a passion for engineering can achieve.”
Mrs Richards will present each student with a Certificate of Excellence in Engineering during a special school assembly.
“These students have demonstrated the skills that define great engineers and future leaders - problem-solving, collaboration, resilience and vision. I hope this experience sparks a lifelong passion for engineering,” Mrs Richards said.
“Our nation needs more engineers, and the best engineers aren’t those who always get it right the first time. They’re the ones who learn from failure and keep going.
From setbacks to success, they’ve shown what perseverance, teamwork and a passion for engineering can achieve.
“I encourage every member of the Crobotics to keep studying maths and science. Keep building, breaking, fixing and dreaming. The jobs of the future – in climate, space, health and technology – they all depend on engineering. Our modern society is built on it.”
Cammeraygal High School Principal Kathy Melky said the team’s success is a proud milestone for the school.
“The Crobotics have set a new benchmark for what’s possible. Their story shows what can happen when talent is backed by dedication, grit and strong support from teachers and families.”
In addition to competing, the Crobotics team has mentored other public schools to join the robotics space, helping to grow the future pipeline of engineering talent.
