Overview

Women in Engineering Sydney and Engineering Heritage Sydney have planned an exciting site visit to the Sydney Cricket Ground to explore its rich heritage, with a particular focus on two of its most iconic state-listed buildings: the Members Stand (built in 1878) and the Ladies Stand (built in 1896). 

These structures represent significant architectural and cultural heritage, deeply embedded in the sporting history of New South Wales and Australia.There will be time for networking and light refreshments post event.

Learning outcomes

In this presentation, you will gain insights into:

  • the historical significance, architectural features, and ongoing conservation efforts associated with these heritage buildings
  • risks and opportunities associated with the use of heritage buildings in a modern venue such as the SCG
  • highlight of the unique challenges faced by the owner and operator in maintaining and operating these aging structures while meeting modern safety, accessibility, and operational requirements.

About the speakers

Alex Edwards
Structural engineer , Arup

Alex is a structural engineer who joined Arup in early 2001, having graduated from in engineering from the University of Sydney in 2000.

Alex's interests include the integration of Architecture and Engineering and to further this end Alex returned to University to complete a Masters Degree in Architecture. Alex has applied his knowledge to the design and construction of many structures including, footbridges, sports venues, buildings and even a Giant Observation wheels. Over his career he has working in Arup offices in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, on projects located across the globe.

Alex is interested in innovation in design and construction, especially with regards to analysis techniques or to using new materials. To this end he has been heavily involved in a number of research projects related to Timber, Fatigue of Steel and fire performance of Sandstone.

Eamonn has worked as a structural engineer in Australia for 35years after spending his early career in Ireland and the UK.  His areas of expertise include bespoke architectural structures, temporary event structures, public artwork and heritage designing in a range of structural materials.  His heritage work includes projects at Leinster House Dublin (Irish house of Parliament) ; medieval Castle Rushen, Isle of Man (UK); The Mint, Vaucluse House and Rouse Hill House in Sydney; Beulah Bridge,  St Columbans Church, Newcastle and Corrimal Coke works.

Phillip Heads
Group GM Communications, Heritage and Community, Venues NSW

Phil Heads leads strategic communication, media, community, heritage, government relations, and stakeholder engagement at Venues NSW. Since joining the SCG Trust in 2014, Phil has played a pivotal role in delivering major events from sporting World Cups to cricket's annual New Year's Test match and even Taylor Swift's The Eras Tour. 

Before joining the SCG, Phil spent two decades in journalism, starting as a copy boy in Sydney, working at multiple regional NSW papers, and eventually holding senior editorial roles at the Daily and Sunday Telegraphs. As a former Director of Sport, Assistant Editor and Sports Editor at the Telegraphs, he oversaw coverage of everything from Olympic and Commonwealth Games through to Federal and State election campaigns. 

Above all, Phil is a frustrated tour guide and holds a particular passion for the history of the SCG and Stadium Australia – and the ongoing contribution each of Venues NSW's precincts makes to our community.

Deirdre is the Group General Manager Infrastructure at Venues NSW, the NSW government organisation that looks after most of the state's major stadia and entertainment centres. This is a $4 billion asset portfolio which includes six stadiums and two entertainment centres. In her role she is responsible for the full life cycle of assets from inception and business cases all the way through to strategic asset management, facilities and maintenance. Prior to this Deirdre spent many years leading multi-discipline teams on high-profile projects in Australia and the UK, and working in the Commercial Transactions team in NSW Government.
